Manchild at Play: Paint Your Own Gromit the Third (Harley Quinn Dog)

I’ve painted up a few of the Gromit statuettes made popular by the “Gromit Unleashed” charity scavenger hunt by now, and a few years back I got to paint up a third.

This time around it was a special edition for my brother, based on the iconic character of Harley Quinn from Batman. Given that the Harley Quinn film has just come out the timing is appropriate to show this off!1

Below you’ll see a gallery of the full painting process (click on an image to see it bigger). I only have a few design notes:

  • There was discussion about what style of head to have, whether to have the ears be pigtails with the blue/pink highlights but in the end we decided to keep it as the original design from the cartoons.
  • The pom-poms on the ears and tail and the cuffs on the boots are made from Games Workshop’s “green stuff”, which is a two-part modelling epoxy that you mix together and can then model for about an hour or two before it starts to solidify. I always end up going back to green stuff as I tried milliput once and wasn’t impressed at the final solidity (I might’ve mixed it wrong to be fair).
  • I had a real problem trying to find the right black paint! I’d just switched to using Vallejo paints from the Games Workshop Citadel Paints line and it seemed that it dried with a matte black finish. I ordered a few more different black paints from the Vallejo range but in the end I think I ended up using Abaddon Black from the GW paints range to get a gloss finish (it might have actually been one of the Vallejo paints, I honestly can’t remember but I randomly have two of the newer pots of GW black in my paint box which implies I’ve remembered correctly).
  • I’ve referred to it as “Harley Quinn Dog” and “Grommy Quinn” over the course of the project. Which do you prefer?

Oh, and if you see this Lee, love you bruv and see you soon.

  1. I’d like to be able to say that I’d been holding on to these pictures to time this post for the release of the film for maximum exposure but I really don’t think that far ahead. Truth is that I had a very busy year and just didn’t have time to upload the pictures until now!
